#TinThoughts: Another Sunday, Another Embarassment

The offense was pathetic. The defense was sloppy. The Bears continue to be an embarrassment for the city of Chicago.

If this seems like a weekly occurrence, that’s because it is. Week in and week out the exact same things happen and LITERALLY nothing gets changed. They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If you open the dictionary nowadays, insanity simple says (noun): See Chicago Bears.

The offense is downright laughable at this point. I will start us off with a couple stats that I got from twitter.com:

  • Only two teams have been held to 10 or fewer yards in a half over the last three years, the Chicago Bears on Sunday against the Eagles, and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017 when Matt Nagy was the offensive coordinator.
  • The Bears 164 total yards of offense against the Eagles was the lowest of the Matt Nagy era.
  • Since 1991, this is the fewest net yards for a Bears team in a 1st half (9). It’s the third time in that span they had only 1 first down in the first half. Trubisky has the second-lowest yards per attempt in a 1st half for a Bears QB (min. 13 attempts) since 1991 (1.84).

With just under 5 minutes left in the 1st half, the Chicago Bears had 1 yard of total offense. Let me once again remind you, the Chicago Bears are an NFL football team with an “offensive minded” head coach. They had 1 total yard with 5 minutes left in the half. 1 yard.

The offense thankfully picked it up in the second half but by then the defense decided they wanted to become scapegoat. When did the offense pick it up? What did they do that made them actually move the ball? They ran the ball out of the i-formation. David Montgomery is a bonafide stud and it will be fun to watch him play for a coach with a brain someday. The Bears got the ball down to the 1 yard line and had 1st and goal. Matt Nagy trotted out his 5’7″ 175 pound running back to pound it up the middle while his 220 pound workhorse watched from the sideline. Obviously Cohen got stuffed and Montgomery came in the next play and scored. The need to consistently be cute is the reason majority of Chicago has turned on Matt Nagy. Give up the god damn playcalling duties already.

Now onto the defense, 3rd and 13 with the game on the line in the 4th quarter. The defense gives up a screen pass for a first down. I am going to make a proclamation here, I need everyone to listen. This defense is not a great defense. We need to stop making excuses for them and realize they are not who they were last year. Take a look at majority of the Eagles rushing plays yesterday, the Bears defensive line was pushed 3 yards back before Jordan Howard even reached the line of scrimmage. The loss of Akiem Hicks has paralyzed this defense. The Bears had 5 defensive penalties in the first 23 minutes of the game. This unit is supposed to win this team football games, they are doing more harm than good these days.

Lastly, we can discuss Mitch. We all know Mitch is not the guy, that is plain as day. He didn’t play awful but once again didn’t take advantage of facing an inferior secondary for the second straight week. The Bears clearly are not going to move on from Mitch this season and they shouldn’t. Here is what I would like to see as long as Mitch is on the field, take the chains off. Stop treating Mitch like the baby that he is and see what he can do when the entire playbook is open. This season is a lost cause, you may as well see if there is any glimmer of hope for a quarterback you took 2nd overall. It can’t get any worse than it already is. Let #10 air it out and run the offense how he prefers. Best case, you find a semblance of an offense for next season. Worst case, the offense continues to perform how it currently is.

That is all I have to say. I would suggest taking your lady apple picking or something next Sunday. I can promise you will be less miserable than you would be watching this poor excuse of a football team.
