#TinThoughts: The Saints Went Marching

The battered New Orleans Saints came to Chicago and absolutely manhandled the Chicago Bears on Sunday. It was truly embarrassing to be a Chicago Bears fan  as the Saints won 36-25.

We are going to start by saying every single unit of the Chicago Bears looked pitiful. The defense let the Saints run all over them. Special teams allowed two blocked punts. I don’t think there is a term in the dictionary to describe how awful the offense looked. It was just a wonderful performance all around from a team coming off a terrible loss in London with an extra week of preparation….

We will start there. Preparation. It is on the coaching staff to come out of a bye with a prepared team. Matt Nagy did the opposite of that. It seemed there was zero gameplan against a Saints team without Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, and Jared Cook. The Chicago Bears had a total of 7 carries for 17 yards on Sunday. I am going to type that one more time to really let it soak in, 7 carries for 17 yards. What kind of gameplanning is that?!?! Why did the Bears trade Jordan Howard and trade up to draft David Montgomery if they aren’t even going to use him? The offensive guru, Matt Nagy, has simply regressed as a playcaller. I understand the offensive line is bad. I understand Mitch Trubisky isn’t the quarterback everyone had hoped. There is zero excuse for running the ball 7 times in a game. It is time for him to take some accountability. Put your pride aside and let someone else call the plays moving forward. Andy Reid did it with him in Kansas City, time for Matt to take a look in the mirror and do the same. There are a lot of big personalities on the Chicago Bears, this team is quickly unraveling. It is time for Matt Nagy to step up and be a god damn leader.

Now on to Mitch, he is simply not the guy. I have defended him relentlessly on this here site. Time and time again I make excuses for his poor play. I have finally hit my tipping point. In a year that he was supposed to take the next step forward, he has taken 3 steps back.  I wanted him to be a franchise quarterback. I wanted the Bears to finally have a quarterback they can depend on. He is simply a mental midget. The second he makes a mistake or hears a single boo, he crumbles. As you know, the second he makes a mistake or hears a boo usually comes within minutes of the game starting. He still consistently misses open receivers. He seems to have forgotten how to use one of his greatest assets last season, his legs. I don’t know what to say about Mitch anymore, hopefully he can keep it together enough for the Bears to be in games. That’s about it.

The defense looked lost out there. I don’t know what happened to Roquan Smith, he is another player who was supposed to move forward but has moved backward. The loss of Akiem Hicks continues to loom very large as the Bears are getting close to no pressure on the QB and Latavius Murray had his way with the defense. The Bears defense surrendered back to back 100 yard rushers for the first time since 2015. Let me remind you, this team was on a bye last week. That means they had the week off. Pathetic.

I am not going to say this season is completely lost just yet but it is damn close. There needs to be some major changes made. A win streak must start next week for the Bears to have any sort of shot at a playoff berth. This team still has a lot of talent, it is on the head coach to figure this out. Shake things up because what is going on clearly isn’t working. Sports are dumb anyways.

Bear down.
