#TinThoughts: Winning Ugly Still Works

Alright folks, we are back for another edition of #TinThoughts. The mighty Chicago Bears pulled off a victory in the desert and I am here to give you all the thoughts you really do not care to hear.

Let’s start with the cornerstone of this franchise, Mitchell Trubisky.  There is no need to sugar coat this, Mitch has not played well the first three games of this season. Even worse, he has not shown that he is making strides forward. He is missing a lot of open receivers, he has more interceptions that touchdowns, and he had not had a QB rating over 83. It has not been good for number 10. I am here to be the voice of reason as always. I am not going to say Ryan Pace ruined this franchise after the kid has played not even a full season in the NFL. You can be a bit concerned sure, but give it time. Mitchell Trubisky has played 15 games in his NFL career. Do you know what Carson Wentz’s QB rating was after 16 games in his NFL career? 79.3. Do you know what Mitch’s currently sits at after 15 games? 77.6. Carson Wentz was an MVP candidate last year. I realize this is tough to watch because this is a game he should have taken major strides. It is tough because all the other young gunslingers seem to be tearing up the NFL. If it gets to week 8 and Mitch still hasn’t shown any promise then you can act like every other Chicago radio caller. For now, give the kid a little leeway.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s talk about the stronghold of this team. This defense is for real. I know the Cardinals are not good. Let me throw some stats at you since numbers never lie.  The Bears defense leads the NFL in sacks, they are tied for second in the NFL with 5 interceptions, and they lead the league with 7 forced fumbles. I could keep going but I think you get the point. This defense steps up to the plate when needed. Khalil Mack continues to be an absolute freak. He has now forced a fumble and gotten a sack in each of the Bears first three games. I know he was good with the Raiders but he is currently on a different planet. The defense struggled early on in the game but after the first 14 points they held the Cardinals scoreless the rest of the game.

I will not be praising everyone on the defensive side of the football. The Bears need more out of Leonard Floyd. Zero sacks and four solo tackles so far is unacceptable.  Khalil Mack will most likely regress a bit as teams gameplan for him, Floyd needs to step up in the coming weeks to show he was worth the #9 overall pick two years ago. C’mon now Lenny!

Another person I will throw some criticism at is Matt Nagy. He is a first year coach so he also gets a little bit of leeway but there is no need for bonehead mistakes. He made the mistake in the Green Bay game of not running the ball with Jordan Howard in short yardage situations.  He made another bone head mistake wasting a timeout late in the second half.  The Bears were down by 1 and clearly going to kick the field goal to go up 2. The offense for some reason went back onto the field for 4th and 1, Nagy then wasted a timeout to send out the field goal unit to eventually put the Bears up 2. Nagy is very lucky this did not come back to bite him in the butt. These are the type of mistakes that cannot be tolerated moving forward. On the flip side, you must give credit where it is due. Nagy decided to go for it on 4th down in the middle of the 3rd quarter, this led to the Bears only touchdown of the game later in the drive. It is nice to see that type of confidence in a young team from a young coach. This is the type of attitude Bears fans want more of moving forward.

Anthony Miller has shown a lot in the first few games. He has shown his sure hands and reliability for #10. It is nice for Mitch to have a safety blanket, hopefully he is not too banged up.

This doesn’t have anything to do with the Bears but bringing in Josh Rosen with the game on the line was a WILD move by the Arizona Cardinals. Let’s bring in our rookie QB who has yet to take a snap in the NFL versus arguably the best pass rush in the NFL with the game on the line….sounds like a fantastic idea!

Lastly, I want Bears fans to take a quick look at something and really soak it in.

Everyone who is calling into radio complaining about the Bears see that? The Bears are in first place in the NFC North. They have a winning record for the first time since week 3 of 2014. This is the first time they have been in first place in the NFC North since week 16 of 2013. The Bears currently have a better record than the New England Patriots folks. This team traveled out West and got a win on the road. I don’t care who you play, winning on the road in the NFL is not an easy feat. I understand that signing Khalil Mack accelerated the rebuild a bit but remember this Bears team is not supposed to be very good. Vegas had their over/under for wins on the season at 6.5. This team and system are all very new. Give it time. The offense will get better, I promise you that. Matt Nagy has too good of an offensive mind to allow his offense to continue to sputter like this. The goal in my mind for this season was to just be in the playoff picture at the end of the season.  I just wanted to see the Bears “in the hunt” in that nice little playoff graphic on Fox. That is all. The future rides on #10, I am choosing to give him the benefit of the doubt for better or worse. Good things are on their way folks.

Bear down.
