An Ode To The Potato

It is Friday.  We have made it to the end of the week.  Tomorrow is Saturday.  Is there a better time to pay ode to one of the greatest items of food on this planet?  I don’t think so.  That is right.  On this lovely Friday, we are going to pay ode to the potato.  A nod to our brethren with the leprechauns.  For without them, we would not have the most versatile food on the planet.

Let’s start off with the versatility, I am going to list out all the different things this little potato can be turned into.  Stay with me, this may take a while.

  • French Fries
  • Potato Chips
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Baked Potatoes
  • Potato Salad
  • Hash browns
  • Tater tots
  • Curly Fries
  • Potato Skins
  • Scalloped potatoes
  • Potatoes Au Gratin
  • Gnocchi
  • Latkes
  • Waffle fries
  • Poutine
  • Steak Fries

That doesn’t even mention the potato’s healthier cousin, the sweet potato.  Now, a potato is the ultimate side.  It is filling, yet can have so many different tastes.  You can eat some of the versions with your hand, others require a fork.  I also could have added the zillion different flavors of chips and the zillion different types of fries I did not include.

Potatoes are served at fancy restaurants but also come with your Happy Meal.  Speaking of Happy Meal. the potato is at the core of one of the most famous food items in the history of mankind.  The McDonald’s French Fry.  The mecca of potatoes if you ask me.  When God put potatoes on this Earth, the McDonald’s French Fry was it’s masterpiece.  Ask any sane human being which french fry is the best they have had, they will say the McDonald’s French Fry.  It is so important that I am capitalizing the entire thing like it is a historical landmark.  The McDonald’s French Fry.

Lastly, try to name a food that has become more famous than the potato.  You may be thinking, famous?  How is the potato famous? Uhh, have you ever been to the movies?  Have you seen one of the most famous animated films in cinematic history, Toy Story? Mr. Potato Head has to be the most celebrated food character in the the history of film.  Sure, the Planter’s Peanut and the Kool-Aid man were famous characters but they were spokesperson.  They did not have enough pizzazz to make it in Hollywood.  Mr. Potato Head though, now that’s a star.  The potato remains undefeated folks.

That is all, I just wanted to remind you all just how great potatoes are. So this weekend, when you are out enjoying french fries or any of the 84 ways you can eat potatoes remember how lucky you are to live in a time where potatoes rule the world.
