On Monday evening it was announced that Blake Griffin was traded from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Detroit Pistons. The Clippers received Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, Boban Marjanovic, and a first- and second-round draft pick. The Pistons received Blake Griffin, Brice Johnson, and Willie Reed. Protections on Detroit’s 2018 first-round pick include 1-4 in 2018, 2019 and 2020, and unprotected in 2021, sources said.
The Los Angeles Clippers did Blake Griffin dirty. Plain and simple. I get this is a business and they are planning for the future. If you were interested in rebuilding, why sign Blake to a 5 year, $171 million contract this summer. Blake could have gone wherever he wanted during free agency this summer. He was one of the most sought after free agents and he chose to stay in Los Angeles after Chris Paul decided to move onto greener pastures in Houston. He decided he was going to be part of the Clippers future and help them win a championship. Now let’s take a look at how the Clippers presented his future with the team…
This was a sales pitch so please understand sometimes these will be exaggerated to lure the free agent to your team but COME ON. This isn’t some random free agent, this is a player who helped put the Los Angeles Clippers back on the map. Years and years of playing second fiddle to the Lakers finally evened out because of Blake Griffin. He provided every bit of excitement needed to put asses back in the seats for your franchise. Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, and Blake Griffin brought this franchise to relevance and they are about to be without all three within a calendar year’s time.
Blake is the franchise’s second leading scorer. Although he has had some injury issues in the past, he is averaging 22.6 ppg, 7.9 rpg, and 5.4 apg. The Clippers are currently sitting in the 9th seed in the Western Conference. In my opinion, they were closer to contending than rebuilding. They have battled with the Warriors in the postseason with Blake and DeAndre, they are one supreme guard away from being a legit contender in the ultra competitive Western Conference.
I get they unloaded a big contract and now have flexibility for the future. The point is you should not do this to someone who has given so much back to your franchise. That is a very shady move and will definitely deter star players from signing with your team in the future. What big name free agent will want to sign a big contract with the Clippers knowing they could be shipped out less than a year later? No one.
Blake Griffin did not deserve this. When the fight broke out between the Clippers and Rockets earlier this month, it was Blake who stepped in and defended the coach’s son that was chirping from the bench. He now has to go from Los Angeles to Detroit in the dead of winter, lets compare the current temperatures in both places:
Like I have stated, I understand this is a business and the front office needs to do what is best for their franchise moving forward. Blake Griffin doesn’t deserve this disrespect from a franchise he has given so much to.
Not to mention he now has to leave this little thing he had going out in Los Angeles…
Here’s to hoping the Pistons treat you better Blake, at least you have enough money to fly Kendall Jenner out whenever you please. I know you aren’t used to the Midwest weather but I would start off with a winter coat. It is only going to get colder from here on out.
