What Happened to Sports Movies?

Why did people stop making good sports movies? Think of the last good sports movie that you can remember. I honestly cannot think of one.  I looked it up and the last solid one was Moneyball in 2011.  That was 7 years ago. There have been so many movies released in the last 7 years.  There needs to be a new sports movie classic, if any of my loyal readers know a movie producer show them this article.

Maybe I was just spoiled rotten as a child when it comes to sports movies.  After doing some research, it turns out that is exactly it.  The 1990s were the golden age of sports movies. Just take a look at this list of sports movies that came out during the 90s:

Space Jam (1996)

Sandlot (1993)

A League of Their Own (1992)

Jerry Maguire (1996)

The Mighty Ducks Trilogy (1992-1996)

Rudy (1993)

The Waterboy (1998)

Varsity Blues (1999)

Cool Runnings (1993)

Any Given Sunday (1999)

White Men Can’t Jump (1992)

Rookie of the Year (1993)

Tin Cup (1996)

Happy Gilmore (1996)

Angels in the Outfield (1994)

He Got Game (1998)

What a god damn list that is! A decade full of absolute homeruns when it comes to sports movies (see what I did there). Remember the Titans was made in 2000 so we are going to include that in that list as well.

I haven’t even begun to touch on the fact that majority of the all time classic sports movies were made in years previous to the 1990s.  It is BANANAS to me that there were MUCH better sports movies made with the technology in the 70s and 80s than what we have gotten in the last 15 or so years.  Movies like Rocky, Caddyshack, and Field of Dreams were made prior to the 1990s and we can’t even get a halfway decent sports movie anymore! The only adequate sports movies in the last 15 years or so have been boxing movies, does no one want to make movies about the 4 major sports anymore?

My main question here is what caused the dip in sports movie quality? Did Hollywood producers realize that there is no money to be made in sports movies?  This is something I personally just do not understand.  Ask any human being on Earth and I would say most of them would like sports movies.  They are movies that bring back nostalgia and can be quoted for hours on end between pals.

I understand superhero movies put asses in the seats.  Hell, I even like some of the superhero movies.  Would it hurt to maybe mix in a sports movie every now and then? So this is my plea to you Hollywood movie big wigs, please make more sports movies.I need them, you need them, we all need them.  Together, let’s make sports movies great again.
